Steve Jobs
Role at time of quote: CEO of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios
"Stay hungry. Stay foolish."
Context
Before — what was asked or happening
Jobs closed his Stanford commencement address with three personal stories covering his college dropout, being fired from Apple, and his cancer diagnosis. The words were not originally his own — he borrowed them from the back cover of the final issue of The Whole Earth Catalog, a counterculture publication from the 1970s that he described as one of the bibles of his generation. He told the graduating class: the last issue had a farewell message on the back cover — a photograph of an early morning country road, beneath which were the words Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish.
After — what followed or was clarified
Jobs added that he had always wished that for himself, and closed by wishing it for the graduating class. These were the final words of the speech. The address has since been watched over 120 million times. The phrase is frequently quoted in isolation as Jobs's own life philosophy, though he was explicitly attributing it to Stewart Brand and the Whole Earth Catalog team.
